Introduction
Few wine regions in the world combine so much history, character and dramatic scenery as the area surrounding Etna. Here, on the lava slopes of Europe's highest active volcano, one of Italy's most fascinating wines is produced – the Etna DOC.
The Uniqueness of Volcanic Soil
The soils around Etna are young, mineral-rich and abundant in basalt. These volcanic ashes give the wines an unmistakable mineral character found nowhere else in Italy. The Nerello Mascalese – the principal red grape of Etna – produces wines of extraordinary elegance, often with notes of cherry, mountain herbs and the characteristic smoky breath of the volcano.
Small Producers, Big Personality
Etna is the kingdom of small, independent winemakers. Estates such as Benanti, Cornelissen, Terre Nere and Passopisciaro have gained international recognition without losing their artisanal character. On a wine journey with Vivi l'Italia, you visit these estates not as an anonymous tourist but as an invited guest – with cellar tours, conversations with the winemakers themselves and tastings that go far beyond the ordinary.
A Day on the Lava Slopes
A typical Etna wine day: morning walk through ancient vineyards at 700 metres altitude, tasting of Carricante whites in a cool cellar, lunch on a terrace overlooking the smoking summit. Afternoon visit to a second producer, ending with an aperitivo at sunset.
Calici on Tour: Wine in Motion
Our Calici on Tour concept combines wine tasting with movement. Rather than sitting in a cellar, you experience Etna in motion – on foot, by jeep or along small country roads no guidebook mentions. Each stop has its own character. Each wine tells the story of the landscape you have just traversed.
